World Cup Fever - Are you feeling it?

My excitement about football (soccer to the Ozzies and the Americans) usually come about once in every four years. Not EPL, NFL, UEFA and certainly not Footy (despite being in Australia for 4 years). Yes. You guessed it. FIFA World Cup. This love affair came about while I was studying in Australia back in 1994. But it was certainly not love at first sight. I was spending the winter holidays with friends in Tasmania when the World Cup fever was taking place. The soccer fanatics actually set their alarm clocks at 3am just to catch the game! This, they vouch never happens when it was time for classes. I was not surprised.

I fell in love with the excitement of the game somewhere in 2002. But it was not purely soccer mind you. No sirreee... I was more attentive towards the players than I do towards the matches. Those tones legs, perky buttocks, lean body and not to mention there were plenty to choose from. They were Italians, Germans, Brazilians, Koreans, South Africans and the lists go on. It was here then on that my love for the game developed further and I started rooting for the underdogs. Back then, it was South Africa for beating France at the opening match, if my memory serves me right. I was also rooting for South Korea for being the underdogs and it got them all the way into the finals.

The Socceroos fans

The match between Japan and Australia was rather interesting when Japan led the team with their first goal in the first half and which they maintained till the second half. Who would have thought that the Ozzies could scored 3 goals in the second half. Yet, my disappointment was somewhat compensated with the 2-1 win by South Korean against Togo. A long way to go for the South Koreans but there's hope for this team.

If you had read Malay Mail dated 13th June, you would notice a familiar blog being reported in an article that talks about FIFA World Cup. Interestingly enough, his title caption does not reveal much until of course, when you actually surf his blog. So, when you do check out his blog, let me know which jersey you like best *wink*

Waaa, I'm glad I'm still on European time! I think 4 years ago, when it was in Japan/Korea, I had to stay up late too, to watch some games, but I can't really recall now.. 4 years ago was another lifetime..
